St. Athenodorus (Syria) December 7
St. Athenodorus (Syria) was born in Syria in 409 and became a disciple of St. Simeon the Sylite. Until his 42nd year he was a monk near Samosata, and later near Constantinople. On the death of St. Simeon in 459, he was determined to carry on his way of life. For 33 years he lived on a pillar and came down once (to reporove an erring emperor). He was often consulted by the emperors Leo I and Zeno and by the patriarchs of Constantinople. He died in 493 and was buried at the foot of his pillar. |
